Types of Containers Acceptable
Garbage and trash will only be picked up in waterproof covered garbage
cans or in plastic bags securely fastened. GARBAGE/TRASH CONTAINERS
SHOULD BE PLACED AT THE CURB ON THE MORNING OF COLLECTION DAY
TO MINIMIZE BREAKAGE BY ANIMALS. A Town Ordinance limits the time
garbage containers can be out by the street (or any where between the
front of the house and the street) to the day of scheduled pickup and
the night before. Empty boxes are not considered proper containers.

Size of Containers Acceptable
Limit is six (6) waterproof cans no more than 44 gallons in size or 20
plastic bags. Garbage and trash should not exceed 75 pounds per can
or 25 pounds per bag. One person should be able to lift each can or bag.

Unacceptable Items
Rock, dirt, hot ashes, flammable materials, "sharpies", poisons, paint,
used oil, and similar materials are not acceptable as garbage or trash and
will not be picked up or accepted at the Transfer Station.

The following materials will not be picked up at the curb, but will be accepted if brought to the Transfer Station at 714 Mississippi Avenue.
· Tires, fee required
· Building materials, fee required
· Carpet, fee required
· Freon-containing appliance, fee required

Grass Clippings
Grass clippings if placed at the curb (unless mulched in the yard) must be placed in covered waterproof containers or plastic bags. Loose grass clippings left in ditch flowlines or street pavement are a violation of Stormwater regulations. You are encouraged to leave lawn clippings on your lawn so that nutrients in the clippings are recycled and less yard waste goes to the landfill. Homeowners are responsible for the actions of their contractors.

Brush
· Brush trucks run a continuous route year round which usually takes two to four weeks to complete, depending on quantity. There are no special pickups or deviations from the route.
· Brush must be cut into approximately 6-foot lengths, no larger than 6-inch diameter, and be placed on or at the curb. These size restrictions also apply to brush delivered to the Transfer Station by residents. Brush not conforming to these size restrictions will not be picked up. Stumps are not acceptable and cannot be taken at the Transfer Station. Raked leaves must be separate from brush.
· Twigs, trimmings and grass must be in a covered garbage can or bagged.
· No brush or tree trimmings will be picked up if work is done by a contractor. A contractor must dispose of any brush he cuts; however he may deliver and dispose of brush at the Transfer Station for a fee.
· Brush may be burned by residents with prior approval by the Chattanooga/Hamilton County Air Pollution Bureau. Call 867-4321 for details and requirements.

Holiday Schedule
When a regular pickup day falls on a Town holiday (New Year's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the afternoon of Christmas Eve.), there will be no garbage service that day; your next garbage service will be on your next regular pickup day.

Inclement Weather
Garbage service may be temporarily suspended when weather conditions create slippery surfaces that are unsafe for personnel or equipment to operate. If weather conditions prevent trucks being on the street, garbage will be picked up on the next scheduled garbage day for your neighborhood.

Backdoor Garbage Service

Backdoor garbage service is available for Town residents. Residents should sign up at the Town Hall.

Fees
There is a $10 per month fee billed quarterly. Persons age 70 or disabled (all members of the household must meet one or both criteria) are eligible for free backdoor service.

Items Picked Up
Only household garbage will be collected at the backdoor. Household garbage includes only kitchen and wastebasket contents normally accumulated within the house. All other trash, such as large accumulations of newspapers, magazines, old clothes, cat litter, cardboard boxes too large to fit in a wastebasket, etc., must be placed curbside for pickup, taken to the Recycle Center, or the transfer station.

Requirements
· Cans should be no more than 32 gallon size.
· An unfriendly dog must be restrained in order to have backdoor service.
· Garbage trucks and trash trucks will not leave the town right-of-way.
· Sanitation workers are prohibited from entering garages, enclosed areas, and fenced-in yards.

Acceptable Containers
Backdoor service is restricted to two (2) cans per residence per day with a combined weight of 75 pounds. After holidays, there is a 4-can limit for backdoor pickup on your next regular service day.

Snow and Ice
Due to snow and ice, there are times that garbage can only be picked up on the curb. If the roads are clear of ice and snow but the yards or driveways are covered, garbage will only be picked up at the curb. Garbage service may be temporarily suspended when weather conditions create slippery surfaces that are unsafe for personnel or equipment to operate.
