History of the School
Built in 1926, this stone and slate building is architecturally significant as
a local example of Craftsman architecture. At the time of construction, Signal
Mountain Grammar School was the only public building on Signal Mountain and, in
addition to education, it was utilized as a community center for various civic
and religious groups. Garden clubs and local churches held meetings here and the
school building housed a public community library until 1970. The first
church congregation in town, the Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, began meeting
in the school in 1925, and met there until the congregation was able to construct
a chapel, circa 1928. With the construction on Nolan Elementary, Signal Mountain
Grammar closed its doors in May 1998. A small group of citizens formed a steering
committee to research what could be done to ensure the safe-keeping of this historic
building. With the support of the Town of Signal Mountain, MACC was developed
and today MACC operates as a division of The Town of Signal Mountain. In April
2002, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and
is the only public building in the Town of Signal Mountain with this distinction.
This historic site is rich with the history of life as we know it today on Signal
Mountain and has gone full circle as it continues to serve our community in education
while providing a place for community gatherings.
